Tens of thousands of people have once again gathered in Israel to demonstrate against Prime Minister Netanyahu’s controversial reform plans. Demonstrations are held for the thirtieth weekend in a row.
In Tel Aviv, among others, thousands of people are on their feet, with demonstrators carrying Israeli flags, holding up torches and beating drums. According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, there are also thousands of demonstrators outside the presidential palace in Jerusalem.
Power government is growing
Netanyahu’s government wants to limit the power of the Supreme Court with the reforms. Until Monday, the Supreme Court could block government decisions if it deemed them unreasonable.
But parliament passed a first reform bill on Monday, increasing the power of the government at the expense of the Supreme Court. Netanyahu’s ultra-right government plans to push even more bills through parliament in the coming months.
An Israeli protest movement has gone to the Supreme Court to overturn the new law. The court will consider that request in September. Critics say Prime Minister Netanyahu’s laws threaten Israel’s democracy. Netanyahu denies that.
