Massive Changes and Job Cuts at BILD: Shifting to ‘Digital Only’ Strategy for Growth in Online Sector

The BILD editor-in-chief has announced massive changes in the structure and job cuts at the medium. In the future, online only will be used, the goal is growth in the online sector.

In concrete terms, this means: The regional locations will be reduced, and print production will be completely relocated to Berlin.

Job cuts: Up to 200 jobs

The changes are accompanied by job cuts, as the editor-in-chief announced in a letter to the workforce that FLURFUNK has received.

According to information from the media insider, there are up to 200 jobs (cf. media insider of June 19, 2023: “‘Digital only’ strategy at Bild costs up to 200 jobs and “Regio locations” are affected by up to 200 jobs” (€)).

The letter from the BILD editor-in-chief states:

“The functions of editor-in-chief, editors, proofreaders, secretaries and photo editors will no longer exist as they do today.”

Chemnitz, Dresden, Leipzig in the future BILD Sachsen

For the Saxon locations, the conversion measures mean that the offices in Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz will be merged into “BILD Sachsen”.

In the future, there will apparently be a regional page for Saxony and a sports page in the printed newspaper for Saxony – it will thus lose even more importance compared to the online offer bild.de.

Quote from the letter:

“The concept of regional editions for BILD remains basically the same. We are reducing the current 18 regional editions to 12, with the remaining 17 regional advertising booking units. There will be changes in the editions in Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Nuremberg and Saarland.”

And:

“We are adapting our office structure to the new hybrid working style: The small locations will be closed on December 31, 2023. (…) We currently assume that the large locations (Hamburg, Leipzig, Essen, Frankfurt and Munich) will remain in place “However, we reserve the right to optimize areas economically. The regulations for mobile working will be reviewed and adjusted if necessary.”

The marketing structure will also be adjusted: In the future, regional market cultivation by Axel Springer Regional Marketing (ASRV) will be structured according to the four regions North, East, South and West.

Political reporting will be expanded

The letter also states that political reporting in the federal states is to be expanded.

The letter reads verbatim:

“All state parliaments will have a BILD correspondent. They will report to the head of politics in Berlin. BILD will expand political reporting in the federal states.”

The conversion measures will begin in July, and the new layout should be implemented by January 1, 2024.
