They fled prison in Beirut’s Baabda district at dawn after breaking open the cell doors, the state news agency reported. Security forces quickly cordoned off surrounding areas.
Manhunt
Security officials said 69 prisoners had escaped and eight were arrested. A manhunt has started for the still free-walking detainees.
In April, Amnesty International said there had been riots in Lebanese prisons and sit-in protests from families over concerns about the spread of the coronavirus in the overcrowded prisons.
