Director Ajay Vasudev is another name for Malayalam mass films. Ajay Vasudev’s fourth film ‘Pakalum Pathiravum’ is about to hit the screens. The film stars Kunchacko Boban, Rajisha Vijayan and Guru Somasundaram in the lead roles. The director talks about the film…

Part of the decision to move away from the mass path is day and night

The biggest strength of Pakalum Pathiravum is its story. After Shylock, I was going to do a film for Gokulam Movies called Sehamathoon. Suddenly, with the advent of Covid and the lockdown, it became impossible to do that. Then one day I got another call from Gokulam Movies. Chakochan liked a script written by Nishad Koya and Ajay told him to listen to it. It also indicated that it was not my usual pattern of movies. So I took up the film Pakalum Pathiravum because I like storytelling. I have captured that story on screen in my own way. As a commercial film, it was presented in a manner that everyone liked. Pakalum Pathirav tells the story of a wildlife photographer who travels from Kochi to Mysuru and some of the incidents he has to face on that journey. Kunchacko Boban is the central character. Rajisha Vijayan, Guru Somasundaram and other great actors are there. There is no decision to deviate from the mass path. Good films will be directed in any genre. The next film will again be a mass entertainer.

Can you expect Ajay Vasudev style in making and conflicts in this too…

Just because it’s a film that deviates from my usual pattern, don’t think that there are no action scenes. The film has a good amount of conflicts. I have tried to maintain my own style in making without affecting the story at all. Chakochan, who is the central character, is also presented in a different way in the film. I have been familiar with Chakochan since I was an assistant. So there were no problems working with a new actor. Pakal and Pathirao are composed by Sam C.S., who composed music for many hit films like Vikram Veda, Kaiti. I am curious how the audience will accept it as a new genre film.

He is also active in acting, enjoyed his role as an actor in Malikappuram…

He is someone who got into acting by accident. Sometimes when my friends call, I just do my best. I unexpectedly acted in Malikpuram too. When Malikapuram was being shot in Pathanamthitta, I visited the location to meet Unni Mukundan, screenwriter Abhilash and director Vishnu and to renew our friendship. When I was about to leave the next day, I was asked to go to the location urgently. He asked if he could do a character. I said ok without even asking what the character was. It was only when I came in front of the camera with make-up that I knew that I was playing the role of a child abuser. At first I hesitated but gave in to their love. With Malikappuram becoming a huge success, my character was also noticed. Happy to be a part of that successful film.
