Musk previously conducted a similar poll on the relaunch of former US President Donald Trump’s account, and more than half of his roughly 15 million members supported the idea.
In a recent poll of 3.16 million Twitter users, 72% agreed that suspended accounts should be reinstated as long as they don’t violate the law or engage in “blatant spamming.”
Upon receiving the results, Musk stressed that people had had their say and that the amnesty would begin next week.
He also quoted an ancient Roman proverb – “Vox populi – vox dei”, which translated from Latin means “Voice of the people – Voice of God”.
However, a planned “amnesty” could worry the authorities, who are monitoring whether social media is doing enough to combat hate speech.
