Marks and Spencer chain of stores announces 7,000 job cuts

The British ready-to-wear and food products brand is severely affected by the drop in footfall to its stores, due to the pandemic.

Marks and Spencer on Tuesday announced the cut of 7,000 jobs over the next three months due to the impact of the pandemic and a drop in store footfall.

The lockdown forced non-essential businesses to remain closed for nearly three months, and online clothing sales plummeted, even as grocery shopping, especially on the internet, surged.

Voluntary or early departures

The group, which employs more than 80,000 people around the world, explains in a press release that these workforce reductions will mainly be on a voluntary basis or through early retirement. Marks and Spencer intends to adapt to changing consumer habits and focus on its online activities.
