ÖFB star Marko Arnautovic is stuck in Dubai alone because of China’s entry ban for foreigners.
The 30-year-old from Vienna should have returned to his club Shanghai SIPG this week in the ongoing coronavirus crisis. But nothing will happen so quickly, its marketing and PR manager Leonhard Pranter confirmed on Wednesday at the APA.
“China has closed completely. It is in the stars when they open again,” said Pranter. It was said last of a time horizon of about two weeks. “But that’s complete glass ball reading.”

The Chinese Super League is scheduled to resume play in May. According to media reports, almost half of the foreign players have not yet returned to the country. “There are no legionnaires in the whole league,” said Pranter. “The question is whether they play without them.”
The Shanghai SIPG team had already spent the acute phase of spreading SARS-CoV-2 in China, where the virus originated, in Dubai. The players then received permission to travel to their families in March. Arnautovic visited his wife and two daughters in Germany, but was ordered back to the Emirates by his club a few days later.
According to Pranter, a two-week isolation and then a return to China were planned there. This is now delayed indefinitely. “He sits in self-quarantine and trains a lot,” said the PR consultant. Arnautovic’s Brazilian teammates Oscar and Hulk made it into the country on March 27, the last day before the entry stop, which the Chinese authorities plan to use to prevent a second wave of infections – eleven minutes before the deadline, according to media reports.
