Marco Vannini, isolate the last words during the phone call to 118: «Please, enough»

An expert report prepared by a team of US experts and previewed by the Quarto Grado transmission could reveal new details on the murder of Marco Vannini, which took place five years ago in Ladispoli. The technicians of Emme Team were able to process the recording of the 118 call from the home of the Ciontoli family and, through a sophisticated work of cleaning the audio and in-depth study of the frequencies, they would have identified, isolated and transcribed the voice of Vannini, revealing what might have been his last words. The appeal process bis on his death will begin next July 8, after the Cassation annulled the second degree sentence with which Antonio Ciontoli had been sentenced to five years in prison for manslaughter.

Marco’s voice

On May 17, 2015, shortly after 11 pm, Marco Vannini was hit by a pistol shot while he was at the home of his girlfriend, Martina Ciontoli. Despite the seriousness of his condition – the bullet had pierced his lung – the family hesitated: he called 118 for the first time, then canceled the ambulance request, then called back. The accumulated delay was over two hours. While Antonio Ciontoli was talking to the 118 operator, his daughter Marina, Marco’s fiancée, was also at home; his wife Maria Pezzillo; the other son, Federico, and his girlfriend, Viola Giorgini. In addition, of course, to Vannini himself, already in agony. The words spoken by Marco during the 118 call, however, had not been deciphered so far. So much so that, in the court’s report, one read only: “In the distance you hear a person complaining.” The analysis of Emme Team would have allowed to identify, for the first time, some of the words spoken by the victim: first a desperate appeal – «Please stop it»– then the request to have the phone. The technicians also isolated the voice of Martina (who seems to say “Enough, up”) and Maria Pezzillo, who would have answered Marco’s request to have the phone: “He’s down”.

The technique used to analyze audio

In the service of Quarto Grado, it is explained what was the modus operandi of Emme Team, which offers its pro bono advice on various court cases. Experts have cleaned up the signal removing the background noise (e.g. rumbling and rustling) without altering the human voice. Then they analyzed the frequencies produced by the vibration of the vocal cords to identify each item, also thanks to algorithms. The sound engineer also took part in the painstaking analysis Lee Orloff, premio Oscar in 1991 for his work on Terminator 2, who said: “I am happy to have helped mom Marina and dad Valerio in their desire to obtain justice for Marco”.

The procedural story

As of March, the judges of the Cassation have decided to cancel the second degree sentence with which Antonio Ciontoli – a non-commissioned officer of the Navy with a position in the secret services – was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of manslaughter. In 2018, at first instance, the judges had sentenced Ciontoli to 14 years in prison on charges of voluntary homicide, but in January 2019 the Assize Court of Appeal, with a much discussed sentence (primarily by the Vannini family), had reformed the judgment and reduced the sentence. With the bis trial, on the defendants’ bench, besides him, Ciontoli’s wife, Maria Pezzillo, and his two sons Martina and Federico will also sit back: the second-degree sentence for three years for murder was also annulled against them culpable.
