Marco Rossi in 6th place in the final CSS draft ranking

Austria’s ice hockey talent Marco Rossi is still very popular with the NHL draft. In the final ranking of the Central Scouting Service (CSS), which was published on Wednesday, the 18-year-old Vorarlberg was ranked number 6 in North America.

Thimo Nickl (No. 74) also has a good chance of being elected, Senna Peeters (No. 101) can also hope.

Rossi is considered a candidate for the top ten and is probably the third Austrian after Thomas Vanek (No. 5 / Buffalo Sabers 2003) and Michael Grabner (No. 14 / Vancouver Canucks 2006) in the first draft round. When and how the draft, originally scheduled for June 26 and 27 in Montreal, is still open.

In the draft, the 31 NHL clubs secure the rights to 217 talents. The CSS has drawn up a non-binding ranking list with assessments that the clubs can use as a guide.

Top stats in Canada

Rossi, who was still ranked fifth in January, scored 39 goals and 81 assists in 56 games in his second season for the Ottawa 67s in the Canadian OHL Junior League. With 120 scorer points, the center was the first European player to receive the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy for the season’s top scorer in the Ontario Hockey League, which had been awarded since 1946.

With 2.14 points per game, the Feldkircher was also number one nationwide among all players in the three major Canadian youth leagues (OHL, QMJHL, WHL). In second place with 112 points followed Alexis Lafreniere from Rimouski Oceanic, who was rated number one by the CSS for the draft.

For the first time in 14 years, since Grabner and Andreas Nödl in 2006, the draft takes place again with red, white and red talents. And for the first time ever, NHL clubs could secure the rights to three Austrian players.

Baumgartner on the list

The Carinthian defender Nickl and the Belgian native Peeters, who was naturalized in December, are also in the field of vision of the scouts. In his first season for the Drummondville Voltigeurs in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), 18-year-old Nickl had 39 points (10 goals, 29 assists), making him the third-best rookie among the defenders. 17-year-old Peeters was the QMJHL’s second-best rookie scorer with 23 goals for Halifax Mooseheads.

In the International category, 19-year-old Benjamin Baumgartner from HC Davos, Austria’s Player of the Year 2019, was ranked 80th.
