Marco and Laura threaten the US. They will go ashore three days apart

Inshore Louisiana residents received evacuation orders on Sunday. Soon two strong elements are to arrive there – tropical storms Marco and Laura. The weather forecasters say that when they go ashore, the two will strengthen enough to be called hurricanes.

According to the forecasts of the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Marco will become a hurricane on Sunday. It is scheduled to arrive on land on Monday. It is currently located 765 kilometers southeast of Lafayette, Louisiana. It carries gusts of wind with a speed of 110 kilometers per hour.

Laura will go ashore on Thursday. For now, it is located 115 kilometers northwest of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The gusts of wind that it can bring can reach 85 kilometers per hour.

Danger

NHC forecaster Stacy Stewart warned that hurricanes only tens of hours away on the US coast “could extend the dangerous weather conditions.”

The US Coast Guard issued a warning to the port of New Orleans, urging ship crews to prepare evacuation plans. In the city of Grand Isle, authorities have placed sandbags to increase flood protection.

Potential floods and weather-related evacuations have increased concerns about the spread of the coronavirus. Tulane University in New Orleans announced that due to the dangers and potential power outages, classes will not be held on Monday. Students were urged to adhere to social distancing guidelines.
