Maradona’s Sons Request Body Move for Public Shrine: Latest Update

The sons of Diego Armando Maradona submitted a request to the Argentine courts, Thursday, to move the body of the late football legend “to a safer place” so that fans can “honor” him in a shrine .

The remains of Maradona lie in a private cemetery on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, where he was transferred, in November 2020, during a mass funeral. Only family members are allowed to enter the cemetery.

Veronica Ojeda, the mother of Maradona’s youngest child, told local media that the shrine, called “Memorial del Diez”, is located behind Casa Rosada, the headquarters of the executive branch of the Argentine government, and will be open to the public.

The memorandum submitted to the court, signed by Dalma, Janina Maradona and Ojeda on behalf of Diego Maradona Jr., said: “All the heirs want, by mutual agreement, to let what is left to be moved to a safer place than the current one. so that the Argentine people and fans from all over the world can honor our father, who was the symbol of Argentina.

One of the family’s lawyers told reporters that the transfer will take place around October 30, the birthday of the 1986 World Cup winner with Argentina.

Maradona made his way to stardom from a slum in Buenos Aires to lead Argentina to win the World Cup for the second time in its history in 1986, and the player turned into an icon of the country like the Argentine Che Guevara and Evita Peron.

The Argentine legend died at the age of 60, in November 2020, due to heart failure after undergoing brain surgery a few days before.
