Many ‘Brain’ Satire Behind the 2024 Election Postponement Discourse

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Civil society and the opposition suspect the idea 2024 election postponementwhich has an impact on the extension of department time Presidentcame from a certain figure, not from a political party directly.

General Secretary of PP Muhammadiyah Abdul Mu’ti admitted that he received information that there were certain parties who pressured political parties to voice the postponement of the 2024 General Election.

“Indeed, this is a lot of speculation because some say it is the initiative of the leadership of the political party itself. But I hear the voices of the wind, which this wind could be a hurricane, it could be a stern wind, it could be a mamiri wind, there are indeed aspirations from certain people who I want this election to be postponed,” he said in a webinar, Saturday (26/2).

“This particular person does not need to be named, maybe the general chairpersons know, but I was able to communicate with several parties, he said there was pressure from certain parties on political parties to speak about the postponement of the 2024 election,” he continued.

What is clear, for him, is that the postponement of the election will have an impact on extending the term of office of the President to the DPR.

“The postponement of the election which has consequences for the extension of the term of office of the president, vice president, then cabinet, DPR, MPR then DPD, DPRD level 1 DPRD level 2, and public positions related to it,” explained Mu’ti.

Similarly, an expert on constitutional law from Andalas University, Feri Amsari, assessed that the proposal to postpone the 2024 election came from President Joko Widodo.

“It is not possible for parties to convey that openly, because what they are fighting against is the constitution, so it is impossible that it was not the wish of a president, only to leave the lips and mouth of the party chairman,” he said, in a webinar, Saturday (25/2). ).

Separately, the Chairman of the Democratic Party Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) suspects that there are certain parties who want to maintain and do not want to lose their power related to the idea of postponing the 2024 General Election.

“There are those who want to perpetuate their power and they are afraid of power. Where will our country be taken if it is filled or led by these people,” he explained, while inaugurating the administrators of the Banten and Riau Democratic DPD, in Banten, Saturday (26/2).

In front of the administrators, AHY said that extending the term of office of the President and postponing the 2024 presidential election was a violation of the Indonesian constitution.

“There are those who are starting to voice that it should be postponed, in my opinion this is an illogical statement, what is the basis? What is clear is that it is not in accordance with our constitution, that there is a period of leadership that must be obeyed together, both at the national, provincial and district levels,” he said. .

Previously, the Chairman of the National Awakening Party (PKB) Muhaimin Iskandar alias Cak Imin suggested that the 2024 election be postponed between one to two years.

PAN later gave support. The Golkar Party began to give positive indications of the proposal. Meanwhile, PKS, Democratic Party, NasDem Party, and PDIP refused. Then, PPP and Gerindra have not yet stated their position.

Responding to the discourse, the Presidential Staff Office stated that Jokowi would still refer to the constitution and applicable laws.

“Anyone is welcome to have an opinion. However, the president still has the same attitude regarding his three-term position and postponing the election,” said Deputy V of KSP Jaleswari Pramodhawardani to reporters, Saturday (26/2).

However, he did not elaborate on Jokowi’s stance in viewing the postponement of the election which could have implications for the additional time he served as President.

If you refer to Jokowi’s previous statement, he once strongly opposed the discourse of increasing his leadership period as President.

“Some say the president is elected for three terms. There are three [maknanya] my opinion: One, want to slap me in the face; the second wants to find a face, even though I already have a face; the third one wants to be misleading,” said Jokowi while talking to reporters at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, December 2, 2019.
