National player Ilkay Gündogan has won the League Cup for the third time in a row with England’s practically dethroned champion Manchester City. In the final at Wembley Stadium, the team of star coach Pep Guardiola won 2-1 (2-1) against Aston Villa and won the second title of the season after the Community Shield.
Four days after the 2-1 in the first knockout round of the Champions League with Spanish record champions Real Madrid, Gündogan and Co. dominated the game for long stretches. Sergio Agüero (20th) and Rodri on Gündogan pass (30th) scored a 2-0 lead. Mbwana Samatta made it even more exciting with the header goal (41.). Shortly before the end, Manchester goalkeeper Claudio Bravo directed a Björn Engels header to the post (88.).
Manchester City with chances of two more titles this season
City, which has been banned from the European Cup for the next two years by the European Football Union (Uefa) for violating financial fair play, has already gambled away the English championship title. Despite the Reds’ 3-0 defeat at relegation candidate Watford FC, Liverpool are 22 points behind the sovereign leaders. Manchester is still in the race in the Champions League as well as in the FA Cup.
National player Leroy Sane, who made his comeback on Friday 208 days after his cruciate ligament rupture in the U23, was still missing from Guardiola’s team. The ex-Schalke courted by Bayern Munich is expected back in the first few weeks in the first team.
