Managing Bathroom Breaks During Long Movies: Tips and Advice for Filmgoers

You arrive at the cinema room well prepared with your hands full of snacks. The lights go out and then it happens: you have to go to the bathroom. Should you stop it or not? “There is always a toilet nearby, so use it.”

This film year is again a challenge for people with a small bladder. Killers of the Flower Moon lasts no less than three hours and twenty-six minutes. For Napoleon you also have to sit still for almost three hours.

Some cinema chains take a break, but at Pathé they have abolished the break for more than twenty years.

“We have conducted research into whether visitors would like a break,” a Pathé spokesperson told NU.nl. “The outcome was 50/50 and that is why we decided to go for an optimal film experience without interruption. This way the visitor is not taken out of the story.” The cinema chain can also schedule more films without breaks.

Holding up too often is really not good

According to the spokesperson, you can leave the room at any time. “And there is always a toilet nearby. Use it too,” says urologist Bertil Blok. “If you often hold your urine for a long time, this can lead to a bladder that no longer squeezes properly. As a result, you can no longer empty your bladder properly. This in turn can cause you to suffer from bladder infections, bladder stones and even deterioration of kidney function. .”

The doctor’s advice is therefore to go when you feel the urge. “You also enjoy the film much more if you don’t have to pee. When the urge becomes very strong, that thought dominates your brain and you can no longer focus on the film.”

To minimize the chance of a full bladder, the urologist has another tip. “Do not drink drinks with carbon dioxide, caffeine or alcohol during the film. These encourage more urine production and stimulate your bladder. Just a glass of water or fruit juice is best.”

An app for the ideal pee moment

Do you want to follow Blok’s health advice and still not miss any essential scenes? Then you can use the RunPee app. This tool gives a vibration signal when it is best to go during the movie.

According to the app, there are no exciting or essential scenes to see at that moment. You then have between three and five minutes to visit the smallest room. The app also shows via a transcript what you missed during the toilet visit.

Long films are expected again next year. Rumors are already going around online that the second part of Dune will take about three hours and fifteen minutes of your time.

From the new Marvel movie Madame Web There is also no official playing time known yet. But given the history of the franchise, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to read the health advice and tips carefully again.
