The collection of signatures on the restriction of international sports events during Covid-19 has started on the portal of public initiatives “Manabalss.lv”.
Ieva Vēja has been indicated as the representative of the initiative. She believes that it is necessary to maintain the health safety of the Latvian population and prevent the threat posed by international sports events taking place in the territory of Latvia.
As an example, Vēja cites the Continental Hockey League tournament, during which teams from Latvia come from countries with a high level of Covid-19 morbidity, while the precautions implemented in the tournament have not proved to prevent the spread of the virus among players and technical staff. This is evidenced by the infection of players in several teams, including Riga “Dinamo”, and the growing number of canceled and transferred games.
The initiative therefore calls for an amendment to the rules on epidemiological precautionary measures to limit the spread of Covid-19 infection and other legislation, stipulating that international sports tournaments with a significant number of participants (eg exceeding the cumulative limit) have not been allowed in Latvia. 10 cases per 1000 population or other threshold set by the SPCC) cases of Covid-19 infection.
