Man Shamed for His Weight While Shopping for a Sofa at Skan Møbler Furniture Store

(KRS): Kurt Olaf Gjertsen was on a shopping trip with his wife, looking for a new sofa for the home. The trip to the furniture store Skan Møbler in Sørlandsparken outside Kristiansand was to shock the couple who were out hunting for furniture.

To KRS Newspaper Kristiansand says Gjertsen that he and his wife went into the store to look for a sofa, and were met by a salesperson who is also the owner of the store.

– He seemed pleasant, and started talking about the various sofas. He was particularly concerned about this with seating comfort, which I initially thought was positive, says Gjertsen.

– Fat man

The shopping trip took an unexpected turn when the salesperson in the store turned to Gjertsen’s wife, and is said to have said:

“You have a fat man, so this sofa will be good, because then he won’t sink down so deep.”

– My wife and I looked at each other, did he really say what we heard? I was standing next to my wife, he referred to me as a third person and therefore came up with this insult, says Gjertsen.

Stewardess: – We hate these passengers the most

Gjertsen was in shock after the comment, and followed the seller further into the store. He describes that after this he was asked to test sofas with different cushions. Down cushions did not suit him, he must have been told by the seller. The wife looked at another sofa inside the shop, and then the salesperson said again:

“This sofa is good for your heavy man, this one has slightly harder cushions.”

– I was very sad and sorry. I felt, is it really true that he is saying this again? Then I looked at my wife and expressed that I wanted to go. She saw in me that I was really hurt, and not least flying mad, and that this really got to me. You just don’t say that, says Gjertsen.

Doesn’t feel thick

Kurt Olaf Gjertsen says that he does not feel fat. He told his family about the incident, and explains that it affected his three children as well:

– They thought it was terrible. I consider myself to have a normal, normal body for men my age, and I don’t want to think about what other so-called overweight people will feel if they find themselves in the same situation.

He wants to warn others from having the same experience:

– I would warn others about entering this shop as this goes beyond all limits. If you’re a little overweight, you feel terrible if you get a comment like that. You will be hurt. You think about it afterwards, he says.

Often talks about weight

Store manager for Skan Møbler, Karstein Abildgaard, says on a general basis that they often talk about weight on the customer in relation to the hardness they want in the product.

– Then weight and age are often something you talk about in a humorous tone.

– This must be meant in a humorous tone, and if anyone has felt offended by the comment, I of course apologize for that. I probably felt that the chemistry was good enough for me to joke about it, but then I didn’t judge the situation correctly, says the store manager.

Furthermore, he says that such conversations are only intended to find the right product for the customer:

– Our job is to find the right sofa for the customer. The hardness you want in the pillow often has to do with age and weight, and I only wanted to help them make the right choice, he concludes.
