Man on oil rig infected with coronavirus – over 20 employees quarantined – VG

The infected person was in Kristiansund for 24 hours before he went out on the rig, says communications manager in Kristiansund municipality Tore Lyngvær.

An employee on board the Seadrill rig West Phoenix has been diagnosed with corona infection. The person in question has been admitted to the hospital in Molde, reports E24.

Liv Jannie Omdal, communications director at Neptune Energy, tells VG that it all started with the person in question feeling ill.

– We considered it so that he was sent ashore, but there was no suspicion of covid-19 at that time, she says.

Drilling operation stopped

The new case of infection means that a drilling operation with 126 employees has been stopped for the time being.

13 of the employees were previously quarantined. On Sunday night, Omdal says that more than 20 people on the rig have now been quarantined.

– But it is important to point out that none of them are ill or have symptoms of corona infection. What is going on now is further work to prevent the spread of infection, she says.

The communications director says that everyone who has been on the rig has been interviewed by health personnel to find out who has been in close contact with the infected person.

Was in Kristiansund for 24 hours

May-Helen Molvær Grimstad, Director of Communications at Helse Møre og Romsdal, confirms to VG that a person has been admitted to one of their hospitals.

– Due to the duty of confidentiality, I do not want to say which hospital we are talking about, she says.

Grimstad says that Helse Møre og Romsdal has no further comments related to the case at this time.
