DrDisrespect’s gaming studio, Midnight Society, loses its chief strategist and marketing boss, Ryan Mitchell, after just 4 months. Mitchell had joined the gaming studio from a steady job as a data analyst to pursue his dream. But it didn’t open.
Who is this?
- Ryan Mitchell is an experienced marketing specialist who analyzes and exploits data. Mitchell has been at the job for 8 years, holding several managerial positions. He is also a Twitch streamer (Lorumerth, 2778 followers).
- Most recently, Mitchell served as Director of Data Analysis at Extractable, a service provider to financial services firms. (via linked)
- In February 2022, Mitchell left his secure job there and joined YouTuber DrDisrespect’s gaming studio, Midnight Society. There he played a central role as “Lead Content Strategist”: He was responsible for the entire marketing of the product that Midnight Society presented to customers.

Mitchell wanted to fulfill a dream – to work in gaming
Why did he move there? Mitchell also works as a content creator on Twitch. He seemed to find the opportunity to start a company from scratch with DrDisrespect very appealing.
Midnight Society was my dream job. I was looking for a company that I thought I could combine my content and marketing experience while leading a team. The team was fantastic. My line manager inspired the whole team.
Ideas had to be laid at the Emperor’s feet
Then what went wrong? According to Mitchell, there was one person on Midnight Society’s senior management who created a terrible working atmosphere. This person yelled at people and pissed them off.
At first, Mitchell thought it was only during “crunch time,” the crucial phase before a game hits the market. Traditionally, the crunch time is the worst time of a development, the nerves are on edge. But it kept getting worse.
Ultimately, this person with their terrible attitude would have made any creative work impossible. Because you can’t be creative when all the work revolves around avoiding a conflict with the boss, as Mitchell explains.
A meeting must be about developing creative ideas and considering how to implement them. It shouldn’t be about putting ideas at the emperor’s feet.
Mitchell says he wanted to get the issue out of the way, work it out in person and publicly, but he couldn’t. After a particularly nasty meeting full of “verbal abuse,” he decided to leave the company. He prepared and did it.
After his resignation, he still wanted to get an orderly transition under way, but he was thrown out of communication channels within an hour.
Mitchell draws the comparison to the working conditions at Blizzard and Team SoloMid.
No bad word against DrDisrespect – only positives
Was that DrDisrespect? No, he wasn’t. Mitchell doesn’t have a bad word for the Doctor: He says every interaction with DrDisrespect has been positive. He has an incredible number of good ideas.
But ultimately no job in the world is worth jeopardizing your mental and emotional health.
Despite appearing as an always dissatisfied, bullying screamer, under the costume DrDisrespect seems to be a creative and professional person who deals correctly with others – except of course Alex, the producer, whom he fires 3 times a week:
