Man in Massachusetts Receives World’s First Genetically Modified Pig Kidney Transplant

Jakarta

A man in Massachusetts, United States, became the first person in the world to receive a genetically modified pig kidney transplant. After undergoing surgery and treatment for several weeks, he was finally allowed to go home.

Richard Slayman, 62, was discharged on April 3, less than three weeks after successfully receiving a genetically modified pig kidney during a four-hour operation on March 16 by surgeons at Massachusetts General Hospital. He said he was eagerly awaiting his return from the hospital.

“This moment, leaving the hospital today with one of the cleanest bills of health I’ve had in a long time, was a moment I hoped would happen for years. Now, this is reality and one of the happiest moments of my life ,” said Slayman, quoted from the Massachusetts General Hospital website, Thursday (11/4/2024).

In his statement, the man also thanked the hospital and its staff and doctors for supporting him during the treatment and procedures and providing convenience for him.

He received a pig kidney transplant on the advice of medical experts after being diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease. Slayman received a human kidney donor, but experienced organ failure so he had to undergo dialysis.

The pig, which donated its life and kidney to Slayman, was raised on a farm at an undisclosed Midwestern location and flown to Boston to undergo a transplant procedure.
