Man City Wins European Super Cup on Penalties: Match Recap and Lineups

Manchester City come out as champions European Super Cup after winning on penalties 5-4 (1-1) over Sevilla at the Karaiskakis Stadium, Piraeus, Thursday (17/8) early morning WIB.

Cole Palmer created Man City’s first chance in the sixth minute. He fired a shot from outside the penalty box which was still right in Bono’s arms.

Man City got their next chance in the 17th minute. This time Jack Grealish fired a shot from the penalty box at the far post which Bono was still able to thwart.

Sevilla actually managed to win 1-0 over Man City in the 26th minute. Marcos Acuna’s cross was able to be headed by Youssef En-Nesyri who broke into Ederson’s goal.

Sevilla returned to spread threats just five minutes later. Erik Lamela, who entered the penalty box, shot with his left foot but still didn’t endanger the Man City goal.

Sevilla got a golden opportunity to increase the advantage to 2-0 in the 49th minute. Lucas Ocampos’ through ball found the unmarked En-Nesyri but his shot was denied by Ederson.

En-Nesyri again spread threats in the 52nd minute. The Moroccan striker stabbed into the penalty box and fired a left foot shot which was still sideways on the right side of The Citizens’ goal.

Man City was finally able to equalize at 1-1 in the 63rd minute. Rodri’s measured bait that led to the far post was able to be directed by Palmer with a header into the corner of the goal which outwitted Bono.

Man City intensified their pressure after equalizing. Pep Guardiola’s team continues to pose a threat through the movements of Palmer and Grealish on both flanks.

Speculation attempts were made by Grealish in the 80th minute. The English player fired a shot from outside the penalty box which was still right at Bono.

Both teams were never able to score goals in the remaining normal time. The 1-1 draw meant that the winner of this match had to be determined on penalties.

In the penalty shoot-out, five Man City kickers namely Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Mateo Kovacic, Grealish and Kyle Walker successfully carried out their duties. Meanwhile in the Sevilla camp Lucas Ocampos, Rafa Mir, Ivan Rakitic, Gonzalo Montiel managed to outwit Ederson but Nemanja Gudelj failed to carry out his duties as the last kicker and made Los Nervionenses subdued 4-5.
