Man City Wins European Super Cup in Penalty Shootout Victory over Sevilla in Piraeus

Manchester City won the European Super Cup through a 5-4 victory over Sevilla on penalties. The two teams previously drew 1-1 in normal time.

Man City vs Sevilla took place at the Karaiskakis Stadium, Piraeus, Greece, Thursday (17/8/2023) WIB. The Citizens come with the status of Champions League champions and Sevilla are Europa League champions.

Sevilla took the lead in the first half through Youssef En-Nesyri. Man City then equalized the score at 1-1 through Cole Palmer, which then went to penalties.

In a high-five duel, Man City won 5-4. All City players were able to score goals, Sevilla had to bite their fingers after Nemanja Gudelj’s shot hit the bar.

Course of the Match

Nathan Ake almost brought Man City ahead in the seventh minute. The Dutch defender managed to head the ball, but Bono swiftly saved the goal.

Sevilla tried to put pressure on Man City through hull passes which were directed into the final third. These efforts still often fail to be welcomed by the spearheads.

Jack Grealish provided a threat against Sevilla in the 16th minute. He curled a shot at the far post, but the ball was saved by Bono.

Sevilla managed to lead 1-0 in the 25th minute. Youssef En-Nesyri shook Ederson Moraes’ goal with a header after receiving a cross from Marcos Acuna.

Man City tried hard to find an equalizing goal by locking up their opponent. The English team’s efforts did not produce a goal until halftime because Sevilla defended very well.

Sevilla almost doubled their lead when the second half had only been running for four minutes. En-Nesyri was in a free position to receive a cross, but the ball that he shot Ederson’s feet could still anticipate.

Man City was finally able to even the score to 1-1 in the 63rd minute. Cole Palmer tore Bono’s goal after heading the ball from a cross at the far post which was released by Rodri.

Sevilla actually had a moment to return to the lead in a matter of seconds. However, En-Nesyri failed to complete the opportunity when he faced Ederson.

Man City increased the pressure on the Seville defense. Pep Guardiola’s troops flowed the ball directly into the opponent’s penalty box repeatedly, but none of them resulted in goals.

Man City almost took the lead in the 90th minute. Ake was able to meet a free kick with a header, but the ball was quick to make a save.

There are no winners until normal time is over. The winner must be sought via penalty shootout without additional 2×15 minutes.

Man City became the first kicker by fielding Erling Haaland. The Norwegian player scored a goal, but Sevilla equalized 1-1 through Ocampos’ execution.

Julian Alvarez put Man City ahead in the penalty shootout and Sevilla equalized it at 2-2 through Rafa Mir. Man City took another 3-2 lead through Mateo Kovacic, who were then tied 3-3 by Ivan Rakitic.

Jack Grealish also did a fine job of putting Man City ahead and then Sevilla leveled it 4-4 through Gonzalo Montiel. Kyle Walker brought Man City to a 5-4 lead even though his shot hit Bono’s hand and Nemanja Gudelj as the last executor of Sevilla failed to score after the ball hit the crossbar.
