A Vietnamese has been sentenced to five years in prison for allegedly passing the corona virus to several people after he flouted the quarantine rules.

Le Van Tri, 28, was found guilty of “passing dangerous infectious diseases to other people” after he went to his native province of Ca Mau in July, according to the verdict published on the website of a local court of law.

The young man is accused of not having completed his mandatory three-week quarantine and tested positive for Covid-19 on July 7. According to the court, Tri infected several people, including one who died on August 7. State media blame Tri for eight infections.

Other Vietnamese have previously been convicted of similar offences. A 32-year-old man from Hai Duong was sentenced to 18 months in prison in July, while a Vietnam Airlines flight attendant was given a two-year suspended prison sentence.

After largely keeping the virus under control last year, Vietnam is currently facing the worst outbreak of the coronavirus. More than 540,000 people in the country became infected, 13,000 Vietnamese have died from the effects of Covid-19.
