Mallorca’s Quick Goal and Asensio’s Missed Penalty Affect Madrid

Palma de Mallorca

Real Madrid fell in the cage Mallorca 0-1. Real Madrid coach Charles Ancelotti revealed, his team was affected by the opponent’s quick goal and Marco Asensio’s missed penalty.

The whites visited Mallorca at the San Moix Stadium on Sunday (5/2/2023). Madrid centre-back Nacho Fernandez’s own goal in the 13th minute made the difference.

Madrid had difficulty dismantling Mallorca’s defense which played defensively. However, Madrid actually had a chance after being awarded a penalty following goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic’s foul on Vinicius Junior.

Too bad, Real Madrid failed to take advantage of the opportunity. Marco Asensio’s 12-foot shot was thwarted by Rajkovic by swatting the ball off the goal line. Madrid then demolished Mallorca but still failed to score a reply.

This defeat nailed Madrid in second place in the Spanish League standings. Madrid collected 45 points from 20 matches, five points behind Barcelona at the top. The difference in points has the potential to widen if Barca beat Sevilla in Monday’s match (6/2) WIB.

“This is a defeat that hurts in terms of the league standings,” Ancelotti told Real Madrid’s official website. “This is the game we were expecting and preparing for.”

“It was a difficult game with lots of fouls, and the game is decided by small details. We’re not bad, but the early goals and missed penalties affected us a lot.”

“The game itself was not bad, but unusual with lots of stoppages. We weren’t calm in the first half. Now we are looking at the Club World Cup and we have to focus on the tournament,” said Ancelotti.
