Malaysia Breaks Covid Record Amid Political Chaos

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

In the midst of political turmoil, Malaysia again breaking the case record Covid-19 with reports of 19,819 corona infections in the last 24 hours until Wednesday (4/8).

Malaysia’s Director General of Health, Noor Hisham Abdullah, said that this was the highest Covid-19 case report since the pandemic hit the neighboring country last year.

As reported Malay Mail, Hisham then explained that the largest Covid-19 contributor area is still held by Selangor with 8,377 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 2,467.

This report of an increase in Covid-19 cases has made residents even more angry because officials are busy making political maneuvers.

In recent days, opposition leaders in parliament have urged Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to step down for failing to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Reuters reported, Muhyiddin’s leadership was increasingly on the edge after a dispute with King Sultan Abdullah regarding the implementation of the Covid-19 emergency status.

Tensions between the government and the kingdom occurred when Muhyiddin through one of his cabinet ministers announced that he would not extend the Covid-19 emergency status without the king’s blessing.

Sultan Abdullah himself asked the government to negotiate the fate of the national emergency status which should have been completed on August 1 with the parliament.

The government opposition considers Muhyiddin’s cabinet to have violated the constitution because it did not consult with the king about imposing a state of emergency.

He also canceled a parliamentary meeting that was supposed to be held to discuss the handling of Covid-19. A number of parties think that Muhyiddin canceled the meeting to avoid impeaching him for failing to handle the pandemic.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Muhyiddin’s cabinet was considered successful in suppressing the spread and rate of Covid-19 infections, one of which was by implementing a regional lockdown in March last year. At that time, the daily rate of corona infection can be suppressed.

However, Muhyiddin again implemented a stricter lockdown on June 1 until today due to a new wave of Covid-19 infections that was exacerbated by the spread of the Delta variant.

Despite the lockdown and the state of emergency, Malaysia’s Covid-19 contagion is getting worse and sparking public outrage.

The largest political party in the neighboring country, UMNO, has decided to withdraw support for the government coalition because it is considered to have failed to deal with the pandemic.

Recently, Malaysia’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, also resigned from his post as a form of loyalty to his party, UMNO, which rejected the central government’s decision on the Covid-19 emergency status.
