SV Werder Bremen tried unsuccessfully with Roy Makaay more than a decade ago. In 2007, the green-whites contacted the Dutch striker who was about to say goodbye to Bayern. “I had quite a few offers, including from Werder Bremen. I personally canceled Klaus Allofs ”, Makaay reports in an interview with the ‘kicker’.
The decisive factor was the rivalry between the two clubs. As a reminder: At that time, the Bremen team was still regularly among the contenders for the championship title. “After four years at Bayern, I couldn’t suddenly switch to a great rival at the time. He thought it was a shame but understood it ”said Makaay, who joined Feyenoord Rotterdam instead and ended his career there two years later.
