A Lille (Nord), the Molinel street will soon be completely metamorphosed with a vast project. From first works will begin from June 2022. Point.
Residents consulted
The landscape metamorphosis of the rue du Molinel aims in particular to promote soft modes of transport and to strengthen the place of plants on the structuring axes. This project represents more than 5.5 million euros, including 1.2 million mobilized by the City.
After consulting the inhabitants and presenting in 2021 the first outlines of the street transformation project, imagined by the agency Alfred Peter Paysages, the City presented at the end of May 2022 to local residents and traders the stages of the project and the work schedule which will start in June.
“The complete requalification of rue du Molinel will include a larger space for pedestrians and bicycles, by offering functional spaces for the practice of soft mobility. An important place will also be given to trees and plants on this axis, ”says the side of the City.
The City has thus detailed its objectives of:
- reduce the place of the car which today occupies 80% of the street,
- strengthen the spaces for strolling (widening and embellishment of the sidewalks) to allow better sharing of public space and calm traffic,
- create identified lanes for public transport (bus lines 5 and 18 in both directions) and a two-way cycle path over more than 700 meters (from the station to République),
- give a strong vegetal and landscape character, in particular to cushion heat peaks: 2300m² of soil made permeable to rainwater and more than 150 trees planted to fight against heat islands;
- enhance the remarkable heritage, day and night, and highlight the remarkable buildings (noble materials, lighting).
“These developments will make the street attractive and make it a pleasant place to move around, relax or have fun”.
The work schedule
In order to carry out this vast project, work on the networks (water, district heating, electricity, gas, sanitation) is necessary upstream. From the beginning of June and until the end of October 2022, work on the networks is therefore planned by the European Metropolis of Lille and private stakeholders.
The concessionary work schedule is as follows:
- From rue de Tournai to rue Pierre Mauroy: from the beginning of June to October 2022
- From rue Pierre Mauroy to rue des Tanneurs: beginning of June to end of September 2022
- From rue des Tanneurs to rue du Barbier Maes: from mid-May to the end of September 2022
- From rue du Barbier Maes to Boulevard de la Liberté: from the beginning of September to the end of October 2022.
“The street development work will be launched in January 2023 for an estimated delivery in the summer of 2024”, further specifies the City.
What impact on traffic?
“During this period, traffic will be maintained as much as possible,” the City has already announced.
A one-way street will be set up from rue de Tournai to boulevard de la Liberté. “No change in the direction of traffic on the side streets is planned during the works. The intersections to be renovated, the side streets will be deadlocked as the requalification work carried out by the MEL progresses”.
In addition, buses traveling rue du Molinel in the direction of République-Gare (Liane 5 and line 14) will be diverted to avenue Kennedy. Access to car parks, garages and shops will be maintained.
