Major U.S. airlines and aviation unions have asked President Joe Biden’s administration to suspend approval of additional flights between China and the United States, citing the Chinese government’s continued anti-competitive policies.
Reuters reported that the American Airlines Association and some aviation unions wrote to the U.S. government, stating that Chinese airlines have gained advantages by continuing to enter Russian airspace, while U.S. airlines have stopped flying through Russian airspace. The letter calls for a suspension of additional passenger flights between the United States and China until American workers and businesses are guaranteed equal access to markets and protection from the Chinese government’s existing harmful anti-competitive policies. Representatives from both the Democratic and Republican parties also wrote to the Biden administration, stating that Chinese airlines operate routes with anti-competitive commercial advantages. If the number of flights operated by both parties is not equal, additional flights must not be allowed to be added.
Liu Pengyu, spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in the United States, did not respond directly to inquiries about flights between China and the United States last year, but emphasized that direct flights are crucial to increasing mutual exchanges between the people of China and the United States.
