Major League Soccer »News» NY Red Bulls add 15-year-olds to professional squads

The only 15-year-old Bento Estrela is the youngest “homegrown” player on the club’s history in the professional squad of the New York Red Bulls.

One day before his 15th birthday, Bento Estrela received a very special gift. The teenager received his first professional contract with the New York Red Bulls, making him the youngest homegrown player in the club’s history to receive the honor.

The “homegrown player” rule enables Major League Soccer teams to directly sign talents who have been trained in their own academy, without these being called in as rookies by other teams in the draft.

“We at the academy are extremely proud of Bento’s development over the past 18 months and are delighted that he is now signing his first professional contract with the New York Red Bulls,” said Academy Director Sean McCaffer.

In the “Bullen” professional team, midfielder Estrela will also learn from two Austrians. Trainer Gerhard Struber is going into his first full season in the MLS, winger Daniel Royer has been part of the “Big Apple” team for four and a half years. The new season starts on April 17th in the basic round.
