On Thursday, a large corona outbreak was detected in the Geerhorst penitentiary in Sittard.
A total of 26 detainees tested positive for corona, reports the Custodial Institutions Agency (DJI). The cause of the outbreak is unknown, source and contact research have not revealed this. One hundred and thirty inmates will remain in quarantine in their own cells until Wednesday.
Two hundred other detainees will remain in their own ward for the time being. They will be tested by the GGD on Saturday. Until then, the detainees are not allowed to work and visitors are not welcome. Employees are tested on Mondays and Tuesdays.
