Main-Franconian experts recommend a teaching despite Corona

“There must be no corona generation”: With this requirement IG Metall went public at the end of July to draw attention to the long-term dangers of the pandemic, especially for vocational training for young people. For school leavers the key question arises: Does it make any sense to do an apprenticeship in these difficult times for companies?

There is great uncertainty among young people in this regard, they are reluctant: That is what division manager Lukas Kagerbauer from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) Wrzburg-Schweinfurt has noticed. On the other hand, the companies in the region are very much ready to offer training even in times of Corona.

Because a gap opened up that was dangerous from their point of view, Kagerbauer, Managing Director Ludwig Paul from the Chamber of Crafts for Lower Franconia and the head of the Employment Agency in Wrzburg, Stefan Beil, appeared in front of the press on Friday. Her appeal: School leavers should definitely start vocational training, Corona or. Even now, although September 1st, the classic start of the training year, has already passed.

For years, the number of apprenticeships and applicants in Mainfranken has diverged more and more: In 2013, for example, in the Wrzburg / Kitzingen / Main-Spessart area there were still around 3800 apprenticeships with just as many applicants, this year there are almost 4300 positions with 2900 applicants. In the Schweinfurt / Main-Rhn area, the difference has grown to a similar level in recent years, according to the employment agency.

In the Lower Franconian crafts alone, according to the Chamber, around 6 percent fewer apprenticeship contracts were concluded this year compared to the previous year. In the area of the Main Franconian Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the minus is even 14 percent. That is not a good signal for the regional economy, said Kagerbauer.

Despite Corona, companies are increasingly looking for young people, also in order to counteract the omnipresent shortage of skilled workers. If you don’t train, you won’t have any specialist staff either: this motto has been around in business for a long time. Its explosiveness is increasing.

And now also Corona: The pandemic “has left its mark on the training market,” said agency boss Beil. He expects the situation to get worse in the coming year. Because young people could then be even more insecure about starting an apprenticeship than they are today because of the economic uncertainties.

After all, the trade is looking forward to this with self-confidence, as chamber manager Paul made clear. “We don’t have a Corona year”, even though the Chamber’s apprenticeship market continues to list 1,000 open apprenticeships. The economic situation of the 18,500 companies in Lower Franconia is generally good. “We got away with a black eye,” said Paul, referring to the corona crisis.

Kagerbauer from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) hit a similar point: Corona does not yet play a major role for companies willing to train. 60 percent wanted their quota of apprentices to remain unchanged. In turn, 70 percent stated that they had received too few or no applications for their apprenticeships this year, explained the division manager, referring to a current IHK survey.

Employment agency, IHK and Chamber of Crafts offer apprenticeship exchanges and tips on all aspects of training on their websites. There are also apps with which you can also find jobs in Mainfranken via smartphone.
