Mahfud MD Represents a Change Figure in Jokowi’s Government, Says Democratic Party Official

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The chairman of the Democratic Party’s Election Winning Body Andi Arief assessed that the Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD had differences from Deputy Chair of the Advisory Council Sandiaga Uno, even though they were both ministers in President Jokowi’s government.

He said Mahfud had a spirit of change, unlike Sandi who was part of the status quo.

“Yes, Mahfud MD, he represents a figure of change in the regime. So this is interesting. Even though he is in the regime, there are ideas for change,” said Andi to Kompas.com, Wednesday (19/4/2023).

“Yesterday, Sandiaga Uno had no ideas for changes, unlike Mahfud MD,” he continued.

The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) approached the two figures to propose them as vice presidential candidates for Anies Baswedan. Anies is a presidential candidate that will be supported by the Nasdem Party, PKS and Democracy Party.

Even so, Andi asked PKS not to offer RI-2 candidate seats from the Coalition for Change for Unity (KPP), filled with the three parties, haphazardly.

He hopes PKS will not rush and leave the process of finding a vice presidential candidate to Anies.

“Indeed, you have to be istikamah, in the sense that you don’t promise everyone to become cawapres,” he said.

Andi does not want many parties to feel disappointed because in the end he was not chosen as Anies’ vice presidential candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres).

“We don’t want heartache at the end,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mahfud has admitted that he received an offer from PKS President Ahmad Syaikhu to become Anies’ vice presidential candidate. However, he suggested that the cawapres be chosen from the KPP member political parties.

The reason is so that the coalition solidity of the coalition is maintained and still has tickets to take part in the 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres).
