Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake and Aftershocks Hit Near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Aftershocks followed

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook an area near Oklahoma City late last night in the US state of Oklahoma, the Associated Press reported. The quake was followed by several aftershocks over the next few hours, the US Geological Survey said.

“No injuries were reported and the damage appears to be minimal, mostly overturned or shaken items in people’s homes,” said Lincoln County Emergency Management Deputy Director Charlotte Brown.

The quake struck at 11:24 p.m. and was centered 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Prague, Oklahoma, about 56 miles (92 km) east of Oklahoma City, authorities said. It was shallow – only 3 kilometers deep.

Residents across the state from Lawton to Enid and Tulsa reported feeling the tremor. The initial earthquake was followed by at least eight aftershocks until this morning, ranging in magnitude from 2.5 to 3.4, BTA reported.
