Maersk sends at least fourteen container ships past the Cape of Good Hope | NOW

Container carrier Maersk, the largest in the world, has at least fourteen ships that would pass through the Suez Canal to all of Africa. The company reports that Saturday. The channel in Egypt has been blocked for days by a stranded ship. The number of ships to be diverted is likely to increase the longer the congestion lasts.

Earlier, the Danish concern, fully named AP Møller-Maersk, already announced that it was considering all alternative shipping routes for the Suez Canal. The company was unable to clarify the exact delays, although it is generally believed that a detour around the Cape of Good Hope will take an additional 10 to 14 days.

The Suez Canal has been blocked since Tuesday by the 400-meter long container ship Ever Given. That ship is located diagonally in the canal and is attached to the front and back, because the sides of the waterway are less deep.

321 ships are currently awaiting free passage through the Suez Canal, the Suez Canal Authority said in a press conference earlier today. The consequences for global trade flows are major. The channel is estimated to account for 12 percent of world trade. Normally, nearly $ 10 billion (nearly $ 8.4 billion) worth of goods is transported through the canal every day.

Maersk also warns that once the Ever Given is rolled out, the effects of the blockade will be felt. These put extra pressure on the capacity of Maersk’s global logistics network. “Every day that the channel remains blocked, the domino effect grows stronger on global capacity and available equipment.”
