Senegalese President Macky Sall on Saturday launched construction work on a public hospital in the city of Tivaouane.
This new level 3 establishment, “will cost 46 billion FCFA” financed by the State, declared President Sall.
It will be “a hospital with international standards”, he added, laying the first stone of the infrastructure, on a new site in Tivaouane.
The work should last 18 months with the aim of providing the establishment with “latest generation” equipment, and more than twenty “medical and surgical specialties” including pediatrics, gastroenterology and nephrology, according to a document from the ministry. of Health.
The construction of a modern hospital in the religious city had become a necessity especially since the fire which occurred on May 25 in the neonatology department of the Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh hospital in Tivaouane, and which caused the death of 11 babies..
The fire of May 25 had aroused great emotion and highlighted the shortcomings of the Senegalese health system. President Sall had recognized his “obsolescence” and promised a new hospital, visiting bereaved families.
He dismissed his Minister of Health Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr the day after the disaster. Three people including a midwife and a nurse are in preventive detention as part of the investigation.
