He Dictionary of the Spanish Language (DLE) added this Tuesday 4,381 new words, according to the update presented this Monday by the director of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), Santiago Muñoz Machado. The main novelty this year is the incorporation, for the first time in the almost 300 years of history of the academic dictionary, of the consultation of synonyms and antonyms.

New words from the Spanish dictionary
Some news in the electronic version 23.7 from the Dictionary are words like alien, slowly slowly, twerking, crack, georadar, oscarize, regañá, supervillano, technoscience o video arbitration and the acronym WAS. Also complex forms – that is, those formed by more than one word -, such as row zero, Red line, sourdough o energy poverty.
The Spanish academic body also highlighted the incorporation of “foreign words that became popular in the Spanish language“, as big data, cookie o banner, as present in the information age, or as hydroplaning, bracket o bulldog. Muñoz Machado explained that they are “borrowings” from other languages and “quite a few of them are from English,” but “There is no need to have complexes in collecting what is already used by people“, he stressed.
Likewise, words related to the environment are added to the Dictionary of the Spanish language, such as biocapacity, decarbonize, ecological corridor or complex shapes carbon footprint, ecological footprint o Water footprint.
In the area of sexuality and gender, terms such as cool, nonbinary o gender dysphoria. In the health field, the DLE adds new voices such as cardiocirculatorio, hormoneation, implantology o presotherapy.
Synonyms and antonyms
As part of the 2023 updatethe notable novelty of the DLE is the inclusion of the main synonyms and antonyms, since, according to the RAE, “a total of 42,882 articles in the dictionary contain synonyms or related ones, and 9,790 articles contain antonyms or opposites in some of their meanings” .
For this reason, he clarified that from all these articles, a sum of 260,188 synonyms and 20,091 antonyms.
“This new information is shown in the dictionary in two ways: linked to specific meanings, and in block form, at the end of the article. New meanings
In its annual update, the Dictionary of the Spanish Language not only includes new terms, but also incorporates new meanings to words that were already collected and new meanings were added.
The term maybewhich until now was only found in Argentina and Venezuela to refer to a type of alforja, now also includes the meaning “anything that one has or carries in anticipation of needing it.”
Something similar happens with the term toxicwhich no longer applies only to a substance, but also to that “that has a harmful or pernicious influence on someone.”
