MacBook before going out? This turns Apple’s iPad into a killer

The end of Apple’s MacBook was always conjured up, not least because the iPad should saw on the chair. But only now could it actually come to that – the food for thought in my weekend column.

Still enjoying Apple MacBook-Family of good health, but the rumors are true, could soon be a new accessory for iPad disturb the peace. Apple wants one Smart keyboard with trackpad for iPad Pro imagine – who needs a MacBook?

This follows a similar approach Brydge Pro + already introduced:

Apple in the bind: Will the iPad become a MacBook killer?

The question is justified, because quite a few MacBook users swear by a real physical keyboard. Only the forced control via touchscreen then disrupts the workflow and is also to be assessed rather critically from an ergonomic point of view. In this respect, such an expanded smart keyboard could actually be the missing link on the way to the demise of the MacBook, right?

This is what a smart keyboard with trackpad could look like (left on the image, right the previous model; image: Apple and MacRumors).

The answer for me is not a general yes or no, because as always in life it depends. Not all customers choose the Apple notebook just because of the hardware keyboard and trackpad. Above all professionals are keen on the flexibility of macOS and, in connection with this, depend on the coordinated software offer. An iPad Pro with an external keyboard and a trackpad is ultimately only of limited use. No, this new combination does not make a MacBook Pro obsolete.

Exciting – in the future a new technology could conquer the MacBook:

Conceivable: MacBook Air in danger

But it looks different with MacBook Air out. A look at the price structure reveals: The intersection between an iPad Pro with a corresponding keyboard and the MacBook Air is very high. In the long run, this doesn’t make sense for Apple. Also because the buyers of the MacBook Air are more likely to be found among private users. For the buyers, an iPad Pro with an expanded smart keyboard would actually be worth considering or Apple simply takes the decision from these customers and discontinues the MacBook Air.

My thoughts on the weekend: The column wants to provide food for thought and reflect on the “news surge” of the week towards the end. A small selection of the previous articles in the column:

So I dare to prophesy: In the medium to long term, the MacBook Air will disappear – the iPad Pro becomes a “killer” with the help of simple accessories. However, the MacBook Pro persists. Why would you have to deal with that last? 16 inch model given so much effort to successfully and successfully embrace the professionals again?
