Mac Leaphart – Music City Joke (Autoeditado) – Ruta 66

Music City Joke by Mac Leaphart on Apple MusicDiscovering a guy when he’s been in his career for twenty years makes him blush a bit. And more when he is dedicated to a style that you are passionate about and accumulates records as good as this one. But you can’t get to everything. And how nice is it to keep running into things like that? Mac Leaphart moved to Nashville in 2012 to write songs for others – you had to survive, you know – but fortunately he did not stop making records as good as this one that moves between Jerry Jeff Walker, John Prine or, most recently, Robert Earl. Keen, Hayes Carll or Jason Isbell. With a voice born for this, Leaphart roams the folk ballad (“El Paso Kid”), 1970s country (“Blame On The Bottle”) or honky tonk with some zydeco (“Hobey, Shake!”) and I find him unbeatable in all those areas. In case he hadn’t already won me over, in “Ballad of Bob Yamaha or A Simple Plea in Do Major” he becomes a 21st century Blaze Foley and definitely steals my soul. Insuperable.
