The country star and songwriter behind many of Elvis’ most famous songs, turned 78 years old.

Mac Davis died Tuesday after a heart operation, reports Billboard.

The artist is behind the Elvis classics “In The Ghetto” and “A Little Less Conversation”. He has also written songs for Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Glen Campbell, Tom Jones and Johnny Cash.

Davis also performed his own songs, and among the most famous hits are “Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me”, “Stop And Smell The Roses” and “Rock N Roll I Gave You The Best Years Of My Life”.

– Mac Davis has been my client for over 40 years, but even more important is that he was my very best friend, says manager Jim Morey in the announcement and describes Davis as a “music legend”.

David leaves behind a wife, three grown children and several grandchildren.

The 78-year-old’s career spans nearly five decades, and he has long been inducted into the Songwriters ‘Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.

Davis has also won a number of generous awards over the years. The merit list also includes several jobs as a TV host for “The Mac Davis Show”.
