Lyon Saint-Exupéry: comic strips take off… with airplanes!

What more suitable place could host an exhibition on comics dealing with aviation in the broadest sense?

There is no doubt that Lyon Saint-Exupéry International Airport is the ideal place for this kind of cultural event, which is more so during the summer period and at the very time when air travel is picking up again.

This is why Vinci Airports has just initiated, in partnership with the International City of Comics and Images, a traveling exhibition (Saint-Exupéry from June 4 to August 8, 2022, then 7 other airports thereafter ) curated by. Jean-Philippe Martin and Catherine Ferreyrolle.

Located in the heart of the new T1 (terminal 1), this free exhibition will therefore see thousands of travelers passing by, sometimes with their companions.

On the bottom and with an unequivocal title “La BD s’envole” the exhibition is divided into four sections or large books:

The fascination for the first hours of aviation

Air battles and war aviation, a genre in its own right

The myth of the great aviators and the entry of the plane into our daily lives

Flying objects between fantasy and science fiction.

Well beyond comic book paper heroes (Tanguy and Laverdure, Buck Danny, Boule and Bill…) the real heroes are never far away, whether they are called Nungesser, Bessie Coleman or even Saint-Exupéry who gave his name to the Lyon airport platform.

For Jean-Philippe Martin (co-curator of the exhibition) the title La BD s’envole demonstrates in envy that it is not the history of aviation that predominates, but the elevation that it allows to achieve. Clearly, this is not the story of aviation in the comics.

Concretely, many boards are exhibited highlighting its heroes and, no doubt, young and old will find their cultural happiness there…

Last but not least, Vinci airports with the Lyon BD Festival and the Cité de la BC (Angoulème) have decided to create an artist residency at the same time.

The latter, after the unanimous decision of the jury, was awarded to Stanislas Bernatt who will immerse himself daily in this airport according to his movements of passengers or staff in order to perceive all the mysteries of it.

On the program are workshops with passengers, mediation with others, support for employees on events centered on the handicap, but also, ultimately, a free creation on its immersion, why not through the creation of ‘A comic ?

Exhibition the comic strip flies away:
