Luxembourg Grand Duke Henri under fire for holiday to the South of France | NOW

The Luxembourg Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa are under fire for a holiday to their apartment in Biarritz, France.

The couple traveled to their new home in the south of France over the Christmas holidays while the government in Luxembourg called on its residents to stay at home as much as possible. There is also a curfew in the country.

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel defended Wednesday in an interview with RTL the holiday trip of Grand Duke Henri. “When the Grand Duke is alone with his wife in Biarritz, I don’t see any problem.” According to Bettel, Henri is in daily contact with the palace. He signed additional corona measures on December 24.

The communications department of the Luxembourg palace emphasized in a written statement to Radio 100.7 that it is not prohibited to travel abroad, provided that the corona measures in the holiday country are observed.

In the Netherlands there was a lot of commotion when King Willem-Alexander went on holiday to Greece with his family during the autumn holidays. According to the rules, the royal family was allowed to go abroad, but Prime Minister Mark Rutte had advised against unnecessary travel in the days before. Willem-Alexander returned to the Netherlands because of the “violent reactions” and made an apology in a video message a day later.
