The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, received this Monday in the city of Brasilia the president of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Jin Liqun, who highlighted the role that the financial institution can play to improve the connection between Brazil and Asia.

The president of the AIIB said in a press conference held after the meeting at the Planalto Palace (headquarters of the Executive) in Brasilia that he had “a magnificent conversation” with the Brazilian president about the possibilities of cooperation between the AIIB and Brazil.

Jin Liqun maintained that the AIIB is there to listen to the financing needs of the Brazilian Government and people.

“First of all, I have congratulated him on his third term and for the great progress he has already made in his new term,” said the AIIB president.

“We are very happy to have the opportunity to work with the Brazilian Government, the Brazilian people and the private sector to promote the broad-based economic and social development of this great country,” he concluded.

“Asia will be a very important socioeconomic area for Brazil and other Latin American countries, so we are committed to working with the Government to improve connectivity, adaptation to climate change and the development of the private sector,” he said.

He reiterated his support for the South American nation now that Brazil has the rotating presidency of the Group of 20 (G20) and will host the 30th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP 30) on Climate Change scheduled for 2025.

He said that if Brazil has a relevant infrastructure project such as a railway or other connectivity to reach the Pacific, they will be prepared for it and with the best willingness to participate in its financing.

Also present at the meeting was the former Brazilian president, Dilma Rousseff (2011-2016), who currently chairs the New Development Bank of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), as well as the Brazilian Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad.
