“Statins are excellent drugs that can extend life by decades,” says Ioanna Gouni-Berthold, Professor of Internal Medicine at the University Hospital in Cologne. Statins inhibit cholesterol synthesis in the cells, causing them to absorb more “harmful” LDL cholesterol from the blood. This has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes – especially in people who have already had such an event.
