NY – If you still use Microsoft Windows 7, your computer may be at risk.

Microsoft stopped today providing free security updates for that version of the operating system, which means that computers that continue to use it will be more vulnerable to malware and hackers.

Users who want to protect their computers will need to upgrade to Windows 10. They may also need to buy new computers because old machines may not be compatible with Windows 10.

Technology companies generally gradually eliminate old systems after several years and focus on updating existing versions of the software. Windows 7 was launched in 2009. Free support for Windows 8, which came out in 2012, will come to an end in 2023.

The price for Windows 10 starts at $ 139 for a basic version. Microsoft charges $ 200 for a “pro” version, aimed at companies and individuals that require advanced features. Windows 10 has regular and free updates for security and additional features. Although Windows 10 is unlikely to be removed in the near future, older versions will require those updates to continue working.

Microsoft also terminated support for Windows Server 2008, or 2008 R2 operating systems.

Those who use Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Enterprise can buy extended protection for up to three years. But it might be appropriate to simply buy a new computer or purchase Windows 10.

As of October 13, Microsoft will also suspend support for Office 2010, a software package that includes a word processor and spreadsheet. Owners will need to explore newer versions of Office, including a subscription offer called Office 365.
