Will the Low Emission Zone (ZFE) extend to these busy roads? The Metropolis of Lyon would like it to apply to the boulevard Laurent Bonnevay, on the M6 and the M7.

The most polluting vehicles would be excluded from these noisy and polluted ring roads.

No extension immediately to new municipalities

The elected environmentalists of Greater Lyon will finally postpone the schedule for extending the ZFE to new municipalities in the east of Lyon, as was decided last September.

But the extension would still concern, from January 1, 2024the M6, the M7 (from Dardilly to Pierre-Bénite) and the Laurent-Bonnevay ring road, according to Progress.

The A42 and A43 most affected (for now)

The current ZFE, which consists of gradually banning the most polluting vehicles, already concerns Lyon, Villeurbanne and Caluire-et-Cuire as well as parts of Bron and Vénissieux.

The Grand Lyon executive had clearly announced an extension of the ZFE to the M6, M7, the ring road and even part of the A42 and A43.

Further relaxation of the ZFE

Faced with the revolt of certain municipalities and motorists, Bruno Bernard, the EELV president of Greater Lyon, made a new concession on the explosive subject of ZFEs.

In February, he had already indicated the two-year rollback of the total ban on diesel vehicles in the ZFE from 2026 to 2028.

Contacted by Lyon news this week, the Métropole does not deny but does not confirm the information from our colleagues. It refers to announcements scheduled for June 23 on the subject before a new metropolitan council on June 26.

Bruno Bernard, the president of the Métropole finally confirmed the press information assuring on BFM Lyon that “this is the schedule” with the exception of Crit’Air 2 vehicles.

“The cars will pass through our municipalities”

The Metropolis project is already annoying some elected officials, including mayors from eastern Lyon. “Motorists who used the ring road will pass through our municipalities, Décines, Chassieu, Saint-Priest or Bron”, laments the LR mayor of Décines-Charpieu Laurence Fautra.

The former president of Grand Lyon David Kimelfeld (Renaissance) also criticizes the measure. He also considers that motorists will bypass the ZFE via the neighboring towns of the ring road, the M6 or M7 to escape the controls which will soon be carried out by automatic speed cameras.
