Low-carb diet: carbohydrates are more important than expected

The so-called low-carb diet is currently one of the most popular diets. Roughly speaking, you pinch all foods with many carbohydrates, this mainly includes side dishes such as potatoes, rice, bread, pasta or even sweets and desserts. Instead, protein and high-fat foods end up on the plate, especially meat, fish and cheese. Numerous Hollywood stars swear by the rapid weight loss through the Atkins, Paleo or Low carb Diet.

Lots of carbohydrates, little protein

But scientists at the University of Sydney have been studying the consequences of diet intensively – and have come to the conclusion that carbohydrates are better than their reputation. The corresponding results were published in the trade journal a few years ago “Cell Metabolism”, For the experiment, the researchers developed a total of 25 different diet plans for their experimental animals, the composition of which differed in the proportions of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

The researchers then looked at how diet affected the production of a certain hormone called FGF21 (Fibrolast Growth Factor 21). It is considered a “fountain of youth hormone” because it not only curbs appetite and metabolism, but also boosts the immune system. However, it was previously unclear how the hormone is produced or released.

The result: A diet high in carbohydrates and few proteins led to the highest levels of FGF21. It didn’t matter whether the animals were previously over- or malnourished. For the researchers, the proof that nutrition has a decisive influence.

Many nutrition experts also advise against a low-carbohydrate (ketogenic) diet in other respects. Because not every body is designed to drastically forego carbohydrates, and the high-fat diet can also lead to deposits on the vessels.
