Lörrach: Cycling in Lörrach since the early days of penny-farthing technology in the Treasures Exhibition – on view until May 1st

Loerrach. Bicycles and the rights of their riders are currently the subject of intense debate in Lörrach. Driving restrictions in the pedestrian zone and the difficult position of cyclists against the motorists on the bicycle expressway are stirring people’s minds. On a penny-farthing you seem to cycle above things, in the special exhibition Treasures you can marvel at a particularly beautiful specimen from the 1880s.

In its early years, the penny-farthing, a forerunner of the low-wheeler used today, made the riders a road user on an equal footing with the riders. However, it also required a special level of skill and daring from them, since the roads were not yet asphalted.
The model shown in Schätze with turned wooden handlebars and decorated saddle could come from the family of the museum founder Ernst Schultz and was in use in the 1880s. It can still be seen until May 1st and you can easily get to the Dreiländermuseum by bike.
