Long lines at Schiphol after the start of the autumn holiday

Departure hall 2 of Schiphol is almost full of travelers who want to check in their luggage for their journey. Trolleys with luggage provide some distance between various groups, but that is usually less than 1.5 meters. It is not mandatory at the airport to keep as much distance as possible, but the official advice is to give each other as much space as possible.

According to an airport spokeswoman, Saturday’s crowds at peak times can be compared to the busiest days of last summer. She says the situation is manageable. ‘Fortunately, the atmosphere is good, people feel like going on holiday.’

2 million travelers

Schiphol expects that 2 million travelers will travel via the airport during the autumn holidays. That is three times as many compared to a year earlier, when travel was more difficult or impossible due to the corona pandemic. The corona pass, which is recognized throughout the European Union, has now reduced the barrier to a holiday by air.

Passenger numbers have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. In the autumn break of 2019, 3 million travelers still used Schiphol.

Earlier this week, TUI spoke of greater crowds than before the corona crisis. The tour operator says there are more autumn break bookings this year than two years ago. A spokesperson suspects that people want to make up for missed sun holidays.
