Long-distance Chemnitz-Berlin: will it really start in summer 2022?

Long-distance trains are to run from Chemnitz to Berlin from summer 2022. But for a long time it was quiet about the planned connection. Is the start date still there?

In June 2021, the VMS announced that several railway companies had applied for the route – the big bidding duel began! The winner of the award procedure should be available by the end of 2021. But it stayed calm. Does the start date in summer 2022 wobble?

When asked by TAG24, VMS spokesman Falk Ester (53) replied: “The process is still ongoing. What I can say is: at the beginning of March we will announce which company will drive. Nothing has changed at the start time in summer 2022.”

Means: In a few months, Chemnitz will finally have a long-distance train connection to Berlin again. Two connections per day in both directions are planned for the time being. The exact route is not yet known. A connection via Elsterwerda or Dresden would be possible.

The city of Chemnitz is one of the few large cities in Germany that does not have a long-distance transport connection. The last long-distance train left Chemnitz main station more than 15 years ago – since then the third largest city in Saxony has been left behind in the truest sense of the word.

Long-distance trains could also jet to Chemnitz from Leipzig in the future. However, parts of the route must first be double-tracked and electrified.

“The project is currently in the planning phase,” says Deutsche Bahn. According to the federal government and DB, the route should not be electrified until 2028 at the earliest.

After the expansion, a long-distance train could run from Chemnitz to Leipzig. The “Bahninitiative Chemnitz” also calls for a direct line to Erfurt.

“A direct line between Erfurt and Chemnitz would not only connect two important business locations, but also connect southern Thuringia with the important industrial and university city of Jena and the regional center of Gera with our city and region of Chemnitz,” says the railway initiative.
