Highest Prevalence of Long COVID Found in West Virginia, CDC Report Shows

New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlight the lingering effects of COVID-19 on the residents of certain states. According to the latest Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) from the CDC, West Virginia has the highest prevalence of long COVID among surveyed respondents in 2022. Approximately 10.6% of those surveyed in the state reported experiencing long-term effects of the virus.

Long COVID Cases in other States

Apart from West Virginia, long COVID cases were reported by 9.8% of respondents in Alabama and Montana. Several other states also had high rates of reported long COVID cases, including:

  • North Dakota – 9.3%
  • Oklahoma – 9.1%
  • Wyoming – 9.0%
  • Tennessee – 8.9%
  • Mississippi – 8.7%
  • Iowa – 8.3%
  • South Dakota – 8.3%
  • Utah – 8.3%

Factors Contributing to Long COVID

Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, points to obesity and vaccine uptake as two factors that play a role in the long-term effects of COVID-19. Studies have shown that receiving at least three shots decreases the risk of long COVID significantly. Obesity, which is prevalent in the South and Midwest, has also been linked to severe COVID cases and the persistence of COVID symptoms.

About Long COVID

Long COVID refers to symptoms that persist for an extended period of time, typically three months or more, after the initial COVID-19 infection. Common long COVID symptoms include fatigue, respiratory symptoms, and neurologic symptoms such as brain fog. It is a condition that requires further research to better understand its effects and treatment options.

This CDC report, based on data gathered from adults across different U.S. states, provides valuable insights into the prevalence of long COVID in specific regions. The study highlights the need for ongoing monitoring and support for individuals experiencing long COVID.
