Locust Swarms Darken the Skies Over Mexican City of Mérida: Is this the End of the World?

On Tuesday 5 December, the inhabitants of the Mexican city of Mérida witnessed a frightening – and magnificent – sight.

Located on the Yucatán Peninsula, the city is a popular tourist destination for its rich Mayan heritage. This is written by the news agency Jam Press.

– It’s the end of the world!

A locust swarm frightened the local residents. Videos show how the mass of insects sweeps over the city and darkens the sky.

– I will never open my mouth again, writes one resident on it social media Xformerly known as Twitter.

Horror nails cause a stir – warn others

Swarms of locusts are often associated with the Bible’s book of Exodus, and many see such swarms as a sign of a coming disaster.

– It’s the end of the world, writes one local resident.

– Deuteronomy 10: 1-20, writes another – and refers to the Bible verse about the eighth land plague, which is locusts.

– It’s beautiful

In the Bible, the plagues are described as ten different plagues and natural disasters that God allows to come upon Egypt to force the pharaoh to let the Israelites leave the country.

Not everyone is equally afraid of the phenomenon:

– We haven’t seen this for a long time. Yes, it’s a nuisance, but it’s beautiful, writes one person.

– Grasshopper swarms have existed for a long time, and they are not a sign of the end of the world, writes another.

Initiated measures

After the swarm of insects caused so much concern, the State Secretariat for Rural Development (SEDER) assured that they are monitoring the locusts’ activity and will initiate measures to remove them.

Nobody knows why

They say the locusts are coming from a contaminated area in a nearby jungle and will disappear from the city within two days.

Furthermore, SEDER says that they will wait to see where the locusts settle down for the night, and that this will hopefully be outside dense built-up areas.

Then they plan to start pest control.

Dangerous, slippery roads

The locusts, which have been identified as Central American locusts (schistocerca piceifrons), have also been spotted in nearby towns, according to Daily Mail. There are no indications that the swarm will reach the United States yet.

Earlier this year, the town of Elko in the US state of Nevada was also terrorized by cannibalistic Mormon locusts (Anabrus simplex).

It writes Daily Mail.

Appeared in the Christmas tree: – Help!

Not only did the locusts devour the local crops, but they made the roads dangerous to drive on.

Millions of locusts had been crushed by cars, and the roads were covered in a dangerously slippery layer of dead locusts.

The insects also covered the ground, crawled up walls and took over buildings.
